Submit

The goal of our submissions process is to create a themed collection of quality student writing pieces supported by student visual art.  It is not purely a competition.

Writing Submissions

Submission Theme: Boundaries

Submission Deadline: Thursday, March 19th

Please submit a piece that adheres to the theme in some way, though the connection doesn't have to be too obvious. Any current Milton High School student may submit.  See the writing tips page for some suggestions on writing submissions.

If you are a staff member, click here for staff submission directions. Do not submit via the website.

Submission Guidelines:

  • must have a title

  • can be any genre (essays, poetry, drama, short story, fiction excerpt, etc.)

  • must pertain in some way to the theme

  • should be no more than 4 pages

A Note on the Theme:

Please interpret the theme in whatever way you like. It is meant to provide a sense of underlying cohesion for the magazine, not to constrain you. Interpret it positively or negatively. Interpret it literally (e.g., crossing a border between countries) or figuratively (e.g., contemplating the hazy boundary between being a child and being an adult). Your piece does not (and probably should not) be about the theme, but it needs to connect to it in some way. Connect to the theme implicitly rather than explicitly, and please, unless it really, really fits, do not use the word boundaries in your piece.

Notice: All work submitted must be your own original work.  Also, if your work is selected and published, it will be under your own real name.  If you want your work to be published anonymously, please specify that in the questions/comments part of the submission form.  However, you must still give us your name and other requested information.

How we select submissions

Our team of four editors reads all submissions without knowing who wrote them, and they evaluate the submissions based on criteria such as adherence to the theme, originality, impression on the reader, development, and quality of the writing itself.  They then select the pieces for each magazine based on the evaluations, logistics (such as number of pages), and variety of topic and writing format.  If you want feedback, come see us during one of our meetings in room 2301 on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon.

Art Submissions

Submission Deadline: Thursday, March 19th

Since artwork is selected to complement a specific piece of writing, art should be submitted regardless of the current submission theme.  Any current Milton High School student may submit any of their own art.

Submission Guidelines:

  • can be a photograph or a photograph of any type of visual art

  • must have a title

  • does not have to pertain to the theme

  • artwork with a lot of negative space is favored, but not required

How to submit

Send an email to celestialtabernacle@gmail.com with the following:

  1. Your name

  2. Your literature teacher's name

  3. Your piece of artwork:

  • as an attachment, saved as a JPEG

  • name in the format of FirstLastname_title_media (e.g. JoeBrown_Flowers_watercolor)

  • 1MB to 3MB

  • resolution 100-300 dpi

If you have any questions about the technical requirements, contact Marea Haslett, room 7302, haslett@fultonschools.org.

If you have any questions about how art is used in the publication or about what art to submit, contact us here or at celestialtabernacle@gmail.com.

Notice: All work submitted must be your own original work.

How we select submissions

We select each art piece to go with a writing piece that has been selected for the magazine. Thus, art is not selected purely on quality.  (In other words, it may be an absolutely amazing art piece, but if it doesn't go with any of the writing pieces, we won't be able to publish it.)
